Bob Shelton's memories

Hello Watson Family, Ray's memorial at UCI was spellbinding as the tributes flowed forth. The moving words and joyful recollections, especially from family members, gave a unique, uplifting quality to the event. It surfaced many great memories for me, including these few: . . . when I was Newport's new city manager and Ray had just come aboard at TIC, we collaborated in arranging an architectural design competition to replace an aging public restroom on the beach in Ba;boa; a decided improvement ! . . . during the Pereira planning era, frequent conversations about the nature of cities and Ray's demanding probes for the right sense of direction for the future city of Irvine. . . . living together for days in West Virginia where we were witnesses in one of the TIC ownership trials. Courtroom tensions were offset by tennis workouts and swapping life stories. . . . the caring atmosphere at TIC headquarters where he visited fellow toilers to know their professional and personal concerns - - mostly lacking in the styles of some other presidents of the company I knew. . . . the teamwork he fostered as we faced legal and political challenges over the destiny of Upper Newport Bay. . . . physically ousting from his office a bribe-seeking lobbyist; one of several examples of his insistence on ethical behavior. . . . the tough, unrelenting but fair-minded negotiator irrespective of the status of the other party. Sometimes he traced this to his school experience as a wrestler. Most of all is the everlasting admiration and affection I feel for a most remarkable man. Warmest regards, Bob Shelton
